About the Course – Cognitive Science

Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence. Students are required to study various fields such as psychological science, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, cognitive linguistics, philosophy, computer science, anthropology, sociology, and biology. Cognitive Science is the interdisciplinary study of the mind and the brain. This course uses a variety of methods – ranging from brain stimulation to philosophy – to better understand how the mind and the brain “work”. The prime areas that come under Cognitive Science’s focus are:

  • Attention
  • Belief
  • Hearing
  • Language
  • Memory
  • Motor control
  • Perception
  • Reading and Spelling

This course contributes in developing our theoretical understanding of how the mind and brain work, and this knowledge is applied to solving today’s most significant challenges and improving people’s lives. This course usually includes topics like attention; memory; visual perception and object recognition; language representation and processing reasoning and decision making; and implicit cognition. This program enables students to critically reflect on conceptual issues in cognitive psychology, critique contemporary research literature relating to key areas of cognitive psychology, appraise the kinds of statistical analyses typically used in cognitive psychology research, design and conduct an experimental research project examining cognitive processes. Completing this program means you will have a sound knowledge of psychology, combined with specialist knowledge and research skills in cognitive science.

Career Prospect

Graduates of Cognitive Science get opportunities to work in different industries, such as information systems, government agencies, educational services and non-profit organizations. Job designations usually depend on a student’s concentration, technical training and elective courses. You can work in areas such as multimedia design, information architecture (IA), clinical research consulting, telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI) and linguistic analysis, if you have studied data analytics and computer programming. Students who pursue a graduate degree in cognitive science often have an advantage in landing a job in similar fields and moving up the corporate ladder. Upon earning a master’s degree or a doctoral degree in cognitive science, you can have a better chance to secure a higher starting salary and may qualify in management, postsecondary teaching and industry-level research positions. Qualified professionals with knowledge and skills in interactive educational solutions, instructional computer games, courseware and Web-based learning applications are hired by Software development companies, research institutes and publishing firms.

After the completion of the degree, you can work as:

  • Research assistant
  • Assistant neuropsychologist
