“ANIMAL SCIENCE”

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Introduction:

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Applicant Name, son of Parents Name. I was born on DOB. I am a permanent resident of, Nepal and I am currently living in Kathmandu. Since my childhood, I have had a keen interest in Animal Science which is why I chose to study Bachelor in Animal Science. As for my hobbies, I like playing football, chess, reading books about history and visiting new places. Regarding my family, we have a small family which consists of 4 people: father, mother, younger sister and me. My father is a businessman and my mother is a shopkeeper as well as housewife.

Academic Background:

I have maintained a good academic record from school to Diploma level. I passed my Secondary Education Examination (SEE) from School Name As I was very much interested in dogs and animals, I pursued Animal science during my diploma level education at in 2020 with 79.90 percent. After the completion of three years of diploma level education, I realized that Animal Science would be an excellent choice to pursue my passion as well as to build up my career on what I am enthusiastic about. Afterwards, I attained the English Proficiency Test – PTE on 16th of February 2022 and scored overall 59 (Listening-63, Reading-55, Writing-59 and Speaking-64).

Why not Nepal?

Education plays a vital role in the development of the nation. However, this perception has not come in underdeveloped countries like Nepal. It is not that easy to get a good job based on a diploma certificate in today’s competitive world. One needs to have a quality education with proper skills and professional techniques to cope up with the problems that arise in the professional field. However, in my home country, the way of teaching is quite different. In addition, the professors teaching in big colleges and Universities in Nepal are quite old; they are not familiar with the modern ways of teaching and the modern subjects that are required by the students to keep them up to date with the world. I have already experienced around 15 years of education in Nepal and now I want to explore myself in an international level and want to get new study experience. Also, the degree of Nepal falls behind when it comes to international recognition. While Nepal is a country that is progressing in the field of Science and Technology, it is in fact still a country in its developing phase. It will take some time to reach the level of education provided by developed countries like Australia, USA and European countries. Moreover, Nepalese degree is not recognized internationally because of the lack of a proper teaching system, infrastructure and global exposure.

As I wanted to study Animal Science, I did some research in a few colleges and universities such as Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU), Nepal Polytechnic Institute (NPI). NPI offers limited courses which includes Bachelor of Animal Science and Husbandry (B.V.Sc & AH). Similarly, AFU also offers a same course of B.V.Sc & AH which only includes the generic courses. None of the existing universities provide a bachelor degree with specialization in animal science. Moreover, these courses are mostly focused on theoretical knowledge instead of a practical based approach that I can get studying internationally. Students interested in the research also get discouraged because of the unavailability of the required proper equipment. Study in Australia gives me a chance to explore myself on an international level. I can extend my network by making lots of international friends. For a better academic environment as well as practical education, I have chosen Australia for a bachelor degree. So, the unavailability of the course, lack of proper teaching methods and infrastructure are the main reasons that I planned not to study in Nepal.

Why Australia?

In today’s competitive world, we cannot get a good job only on the basis of academic certificates. We need to have the knowledge along with professional skills to orient ourselves in the work. Moreover, practical-based knowledge is far more important than theoretical knowledge. Furthermore, in my 3 years of career experience, I was not able to enhance my knowledge in handling sophisticated veterinary equipment’s. I, therefore, realized that there is still a lot more to learn about Animal’s behaviour & its health. So, I started researching colleges and Universities. In spite of being busy with my work, I then started online research and also received suggestions from my friends. This research and suggestions gave me an idea of pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in English-speaking countries which will support my global career opportunities. After that, I found Australia to be one of the best destinations for my further studies. In fact, Australia is the 2nd best destination for foreign students. The education system of Australia is geared up to enhance and stimulate the creativity of students. Australian Universities have a strong reputation worldwide. The Universities seek to prepare their students for a successful career in their chosen fields by supplying them with the new and innovative technologies. Australia has a peaceful and friendly environment, multiple cultural diversities, updated courses, good teaching techniques along with practical-based knowledge. Australian Universities help in promoting the student’s creativity in different researches. Moreover, Australia is ranked in the top 15 among the safest countries in the world. In addition to this, Australia has lower living costs as compared to the other countries. The Australian Government has laid out Education Service for Overseas Students (ESOS) laws for all international students to have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding time in Australia. These laws are laid out for the promotion of quality education and consumer protection for immigrant students and are the ESOS framework which is the Education Service for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) 2000 and the National code 2007. For an international student in a course listed on CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Intuitions and Courses for Overseas Students) ensures that the overseas students get their student (fees, course, modes of study, etc) rights protected. Consumer protection makes sure that the students receive a refund if they do not satisfy the visa conditions. Australia also has the Tuition Protection Service (TPS) laid out for those students whose education providers are not able to completely fulfill all the parameters of the course of study. It ensures a refund for an overseas student if they are not able to complete their courses. Australia is focused on every field such as Agriculture, Management, Medicals, IT etc. Getting the opportunity of PSW is a life-changing time period for students as they can use this time to get new work experience. As Australia is one of the top country for international students that creates a diverse environment to learn and gain knowledge. It’ll enhance the professional skills, and students will gather practical knowledge of the international market. The above-mentioned reasons are strong enough for me to decide on choosing Australia as my foremost study destination.

 Why not other countries?

As I was not satisfied with the education system in Nepal and the lack of specialized Animal Science courses, I started doing some research on the internet about the international universities offering the course that I desire to study. During the process, I found some options in countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Germany and Japan besides Australia.

The USA does not fit my choice due to security and financial reasons. The USA has the greater crime rate in comparison to others and the fees are higher for Bachelor degrees. The overall living and travel cost is also higher in the USA. The UK also has expensive tuition fees and living costs. The difference is even bigger when comparing the city areas like London, New York and Sydney. Based on my research and data published by Numbeo, I have found that rent prices in London are 30% higher and in New York it is 80% than that of Sydney. Similarly the consumer prices are around 3% and 22% higher in London and New York as compared to Sydney. Although Canada is a good choice for education and the living cost is comparable with Australia, I was unsatisfied with the climatic condition. Canada is very cold and I can only adjust in a moderate climate like Australia. The tuition fee in the UK can be up to GBP 30,000 per year while in the USA it can be more than USD 50,000. That is way higher compared to Australia where students pay on average AUD 30,000 per year. The currency exchange rate of Australia (1 AUD = NPR 85.63) is lower compared to the USA (1 USD = NPR 120.68), UK (1 GBP = NPR 163.10) and Canada (1 CAD = NPR 94.48). Japan was another option that I was willing to study but the language barrier was my biggest problem. I had the same problem with other European countries like Germany as I have to take additional language classes besides English. Finally, I came to the conclusion to choose Australia due to security, climate, language and other feasible means.

Why Sydney?

There is no doubt that Sydney is one of the top cities in Australia when it comes to quality of life. It is also regarded as one of the safest cities in the world. An international student can have a better quality life living in Sydney and nearby suburbs. It is also one of the most economically advanced regions in Australia so it makes it easy to find part-time jobs for students to support their living cost if necessary. Sydney is a major hub for international students so it is like a melting pot that brings people from different cultures together, thus promoting diversity. The city also has good weather and it makes it easy for newcomers to adapt quickly. Therefore, because of these reasons, I decided to choose Sydney over other cities to pursue my education.

Why UNIVERSITY NAME?

Without a doubt, UNIVERSITY NAME (UNIVERSITY NAME) is one of the top universities in Australia and a globally recognized institution for international students. According to the QS World University Rankings 2022, it is ranked at Reference in the world. It is ranked in the top 2% of universities globally. UNIVERSITY NAME has multiple campuses in the greater Western Sydney area. It has campuses in Parramatta, Sydney, Penrith, Bankstown, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Hawkesbury. This makes it a popular choice for students to pursue a degree in UNIVERSITY NAME as it gives them more choices to choose their campus location. UNIVERSITY NAME offers a wide range of courses in Business, Animal Science, Engineering and other areas. The courses are designed such that it suits the needs of the current market and these courses are updated regularly. In addition, course content of the UNIVERSITY NAME is quite good to build up technical and practical expertise needed for a rewarding career, which includes biodiversity, wildlife studies, human animal interactions, animal health welfare, animal nutrition and feeding, animal production and behaviour, etc. Before making my final decision, I decided to compare UNIVERSITY NAME with other universities in Australia offering similar courses. During the process, I came to know that several universities offering the Bachelor of Animal science course and compared as below with UNIVERSITY NAME:

University

Location

Fee per annum

Reason

         University of  Sydney

Sydney

NSW

                         $ 52,000

High tuition fee and
 infeasible location

Western Sydney

              University

Parramatta

 NSW

                         $ 32,000

From the above comparison table, I came to the conclusion that UNIVERSITY NAME is the best option for me to pursue my Bachelor degree. Clearly, it is the most affordable university ($33,280/year) in the list and besides that it is situated in Sydney which is one of Australia’s fastest growing economic regions. On top of that, I am eligible to receive a scholarship of $6,000/year in UNIVERSITY NAME which makes an even better choice for pursuing my Bachelor degree. Although other universities rank above UNIVERSITY NAME, with a ranking of 494, UNIVERSITY NAME is still considered one of the top universities in the world. Therefore, I decided to choose UNIVERSITY NAME to complete my Bachelor degree.

Why Bachelor of Animal Science?

From my early childhood, I had a deep interest in animals which ultimately led to my interest in Animal Science. While I was in the final year of my Diploma degree, I started treating and learning animals with related tools which made me explore even more. During my course, I worked as an intern for 4 months and did some online research on animal science and wanted to explore more. A career in Animal Science and Health is one of the most in-demand professions in the 21st century. The amount of scalability that we are able to achieve with the help of animals is unprecedented and no one could have imagined this a few decades ago. This also generates a huge amount of animal’s health issues and thus comes the problem of learning and treating the issue. Veterinarian has been in high demand since the turn of the century and are regarded as one of the top paying jobs in the world right now. According to au.talent.com, Veterinarian will make an average of USD $105,000 per annum (https://au.talent.com/salary?job=veterinarian ) making Animal Science a lucrative career option. Furthermore, animal health field is versatile and is less saturated as compared to other animal science sectors like husbandry and production. I believed as a science student that animal health is the perfect subject which I want to study further, where skills in treatment alongside handling and restraining of animal can be developed with new innovative process. In addition, this subject helps to overcome the challenges associated with visualizing, learning, analyzing, and handling the animals. Moreover, with the completion of 3 years of this degree every individual turns into the skillful candidate to solve the real world problem which is associated with animal health and behaviour. These things have fascinated me to choose animal science course as a further study.

Career plan after completing degree from Australia:

After completion of my bachelor’s degree in UNIVERSITY NAME, I will get two years of post-study work (PSW). During PSW, I could work in the international market in Australia which will provide me much needed international working exposure. I will not find it difficult to return back to Nepal as it is evolving rapidly and modern technologies such as advance ultrasound scans, digital records and other veterinary tools and techniques, etc are being implemented for use around the country. Sooner or later, people will need animal doctor, expert and caretaker to manage the animal’s health problems and other issues. During my research about the job market in Nepal, I found the course I chose to study is in high demand. I can use my skills which I will accomplish, in the research field to extract the necessary information to analyze and implement it to get the productive outcome. For this purpose, people in Nepal will hire and visit the doctor in account of concern for their animal’s health issues while the monthly pay is approximately NPR 49,400 as the starting salary and can reach to almost NPR 149,000 with the experience which I had taken information from the internet while surfing (http://www.salaryexplorer.com/salary-survey.php?loc=151&loctype=1&job=6235&jobtype=3). I may join various private and/or government organizations as an animal doctor or open my own clinic. Also, self- satisfaction is a crucial thing for me which I will get from skillful academic achievement, subject related job enrolment such as veterinary technician, veterinary volunteer, animal expert, veterinary scientist and so on. I can apply for jobs through newspaper ads or looking in online job portals like linkedIn, merojob.com, jobsnepal.com, etc.

Incentive to return back home:

I have always had a passion for visiting new places and acquiring knowledge from all over the world, but at the end of the day I always wanted to return back to my home where I belong. The reason for going to study in Australia is to gain global exposure and return back home and use my skills and knowledge to empower the people of my country. Therefore, I will definitely return to Nepal after completing my studies and work for the betterment of society and people living in my country. Another reason I want to come back to Nepal is my family. I have my parents and a lot of relatives here. I have spent all my life spending time with them, celebrating festivals together and sharing moments of happiness and sorrows. Ultimately, I want to stay close with my parents and relatives in the future. My parents also need me to take care of them when they grow older and it’s a part of our culture to look after them. Our family also owns some property and business in Nepal and they will need me to look after it in the future. That is we own a small-scale industry that supplies goods and a house in Jagdishpur, Kapilvastu. With continuous effort made by the Nepal government in the field of digitizing Nepal such as use of advance MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), ultrasound scans, digital records and other veterinary tools and techniques and in the next 5-10 years, Nepal will see a tremendous amount of growth in the field of animal health and science. That will eventually help me get settled and find a satisfying job in the field of Animal Science. So these are the reasons why I will return back home after finishing my studies in Australia.
