ENTOMOLOGY

A specialized course under Science Stream / Discipline

About the Course – Entomology

This course consists of two major groups of terrestrial arthropods and their role in communities. In this course, you will examine the arachnids and insects and will explore their biology, ecology, life-histories, role in ecosystems and classification. Preparation and classification of an insect collection make up the practical work. Insects are the most abundant and diverse group of animals on earth; beetles alone account for 25% of animal life.
Insects impact almost each and every side of the ecosystem and our lives. Many insects play precious and essential roles in pollinating exclusive plant species, in predating and controlling insect pests and in recycling nutrients. Other bugs are harmful and are the vectors for fundamental diseases such as plague, malaria and lately emerged viral disease Zika. This course will grant college students with a broad introduction to entomology inclusive of insect evolution, ecology, anatomy and physiology. Students will research utilized entomological matters such as sustainable insect administration in agricultural ecosystems, clinical and veterinary entomology, insect-inspired technologies, and insects as a future food source for both livestock and humans.

Employment Opportunity

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) groups entomologists in particular with zoologists and wildlife biologists. As of 2012, this group made an average annual income of $57,710. However, income will differ relying on the type of job, experience level, and location. Employment of zoologists and wildlife biologists as a whole is projected to increase by 5% from 2012 to 2022, which is slower than the common for all occupations. Most new jobs for entomologists will in all likelihood be in biotechnology or environmental fields.
