BIOCHEMISTRY

A specialized course under Science Stream / Discipline

About the Course – Biochemistry

Biochemistry is a branch of science that studies the chemical processes in a living organism. It analyses the molecular level in a living organism and aims to get a better understanding of the chemical reactions that occur inside living organisms.

Biochemistry applies chemistry to study biological processes at the cellular and molecular level. It emerged as a distinct discipline around the beginning of the 20th century when scientists combined chemistry, physiology, and biology to investigate the chemistry of living systems.

Biochemistry is both a life science and a chemical science as it explores the chemistry of living organisms and the molecular basis for the changes occurring in living cells. Biochemistry helps in providing explanations for the causes of several diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Applying the laws and methods of chemistry, physics, molecular biology, and immunology, it studies the structure and behavior of the complex molecules found in organisms and dives deep into how these molecules interact to form cells, tissues, and whole organisms. Biochemistry contributes to the understanding of disease, genetics, evolution, and DNA. Biochemistry enables the creation of safe synthetic drugs, helps forensic teams solve crimes, allows the development of agriculture and food, and much, much more

Career Prospect

A graduate with a biochemistry degree can be employable with numerous possibilities. While professionals with doctorate degrees work in research laboratories, a bachelor’s degree holder can be employed in other fields. Although graduates with biology degrees, such as biochemistry, can find jobs as scientists in laboratories, there are various technician positions as well even for a graduate with minimum qualification.
