OPTICAL SCIENCE

A specialized course under Health Stream

About the Course – Optical Science

Optical Sciences is  a branch of physics that studies the characteristics and behavior of light. From telecommunications to national defense to medicine, optical science has broad applications. Optical systems are an inseparable part of health care, life sciences, and national defense. In Optical Science program, you will be taught about the math and engineering principles that are used in optical system experiments and testing.  Optical science is a specialization under Physics. Optical sciences, specialties within physics, include the studies of light and vision. Optical sciences examine how light is produced and reproduced and other behavioral aspects of light. Inventions of contact lenses, microscopes, telescopes, binoculars, cameras, military night vision goggles and lasers were made possible through Optical Science.

Listed here are some of the principal objectives of the course.

  • To acquire knowledge of optical instruments and field-specific computer software.
  • To analyze and design optical systems
  • To utilize optical systems in medical diagnosis, disease management, homeland security, and telecommunication

Career Prospect

With a degree in Optical science, students may choose from careers in the following areas: Optical design, Optical fabrication and testing, Optical instrumentation, Optical communications and so on. A career in optical science involves creating, discovering and/or exploring the use of lenses and the properties of light. Dispensing optician is a common job or career that most graduates pursue. As a Dispensing Optician, you fit patients with glasses and contact lenses based on the prescriptions of their ophthalmologist or optometrist.

Career Opportunity

Optical Engineer, Dispensing Optician, Optical Technician

Employment Opportunity

Optical Science graduates pursue careers in the non-profit sector and academia. Graduates may conduct research or work with top-of-the-line optical technologies. As per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), it is  projected that jobs for physicists, including optical physicists will increase by 9% between 2018 and 2028. The median annual income for physicists in general is $120,950, according to the BLS. Scientific research and development services are the employers that hire the highest number of employees.
