Introduction and Family Background
I have always been keen to learn new things. As an enthusiastic student of Health Science (Nursing), I (Name) would like to present my independent research through this ‘Statement of Purpose ‘concerning to pursuing my higher education in Australia. I was born on (Date) as the youngest daughter (Parent’s Name) in (Address). My family has always been the constant source of support and encouragement.  My father expired on 20th August 2015 due to cancer and my mother has supported the family independently. I have two elder siblings (Name) the eldest is a Civil Engineer working in ERMC Pvt. Ltd. Kathmandu, Nepal, whereas (Name) is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Copenhagen, Denmark. Currently, I am residing with my in-laws after marrying (Name), a permanent resident of Biratnagar, Morang, Nepal. I was married on 14th of February 2018 and my husband completed bachelor’s degree from India. My husband is a business man running his own business in Biratnagar, Nepal. He has been operating an (Company Name) in Biratnagar since 2015.  Describing about my in-law’s family, my Father in-law late (Name) expired on 3rd April 2017. My mother in law (Name) is a housewife and also once a week she manages audit for a firm called (Company Name) as a senior accountant. My brother in law (Name) and his wife (Name)had both stayed in UK, where my brother in law completed his Master’s Degree. After coming back he is currently working as an Operation Manager at Agni Hospitality & Supplies.  I was drawn to the idea of not only focusing on particular patient care that nurses provides, but also solving problems that affects health of entire population. Hence, I have decided to pursue Masters in Public Health, in Central Queensland University, Australia with the full support of my families.

Academic Background

As far as my academic background all my qualifications are concerned, I have completed my School Leaving Certificate (SLC) from (School Name) Biratnagar, Morang, Nepal, in 2011 scoring 79.88% under the board of government of Ministry of Education and Sports, Nepal. Then I joined (High_School Name), Biratnagar for my intermediate level education with Science faculty. I passed y intermediate level in 2013 scoring xx%. Likewise I joined Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital, Biratnagar, and a constituent college under Kathmandu University School of Medical sciences for B.Sc. Nursing degree in August 2013. I successfully completed my bachelor’s degree in October 2017 scoring 68.80%. After that I appeared for National Licensure Examination conducted for nurses by Nepal Nursing Council and got myself registered on 11th march 2018.

Work Experience

After being a registered Nurse of Nepal, I joined Nobel medical college and teaching hospital, Biratnagar on 15th April 2018 (B.Sc. Nurse in ICU) ward)and worked up to 6th November 2018. I got 6 months of work experience over there and. As I had done my practical experience during my working period. Hence, I got varieties of knowledge working as an ICU Nurse. Disciple, responsibilities, punctuality, goal orientation, confidence, rights and duties are the important factor throughout the life which I learned very properly. The skills and practices necessary for clinical setting, patient care as well as dealing with both patients and their family. Due to all these experience I am being able to fight with the difficulties of my personal life as well as it had taught me to be independent too.

And I again joined Birat Medical College and Teaching Hospital from 15th December 2018 and working (B.Sc. Nurse in Medical Ward) till date(My Work Experience Letter Are Enclosed). Later on, I felt the necessities for postgraduate education for my future career and decided to pursue my master level education in abroad in my related field. Consulting expert people, families as well as friends I decide to go foreign country for my study. Therefore, I decided time for IELTS preparation and test beside my work. I prepared for my test through various means and finally appeared for my IELTS exam on 17th of January 2019 at Biratnagar, Nepal IELTS test center and come to know about Central Queensland University, Sydney, Australia through a consultancy. My result was published on 30th January 2019 where I scored 6 in Listening, 6.5 in Reading 7.5 in speaking and, 6 in writing. I scored 6.5 overall and not less than 6 in each band (IELTS Scorecard attached). I had submitted the required documents on 10th April 2019 for offer and my interview was taken on 12th April 2019.  I had received conditional offer letter from CQU on 16th April 2019. My financials were assessed and approved (GTE) on 4th June 2019. I sent COE request on 7th June 2019 and I am waiting for it to arrive.

Relevancy of Nursing to Public Health

During my Bachelor studies, I have studied subjects related to public health like Community health nursing I & II, Educational science and Health economics with other subjects of nursing. These subjects along with my involvement in community health during the practical hours have helped me develop a foundation for public health. I have always pictured myself being a healthcare professional having access to majority rather than limitation only to hospital and health care. My nursing qualification equipped me with the knowledge and skills in managing specific health care issues and improving clinical practices and now having a public health degree would help me positively influence the health behavior of individuals and communities managing the living and working conditions that influence their health.     

 The concept of public health has historically been composed of small groups of specialist nurses but if we see global health prospects in recent years, it has gained a higher profile with more health professional being curious in how it can improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. This change has become possible only due to the understanding of the social causes of ill health and different campaign to reduce health inequalities. Public health refers to all organized measures whether public or private to prevent disease, promote health and prolongs life among the population as a whole. Its activities aim to provide conditions in which people can be healthy and focus on entire population, not on individual patients or diseases. Thus, it is the concern of every nurse and midwives, which will help to develop not only specialized care but also help people in general to maximize their health and wellbeing. In addition, nursing in all specialties can influence the public health of individual, the wider population and community as a whole. Hence, the area of public health is no longer limited to few professionals and can and should be core to all nursing practices too.

Decision to Study Master of Public Health

As, I am interested in Public Health issues, Health Policy and Management. MPH is best relevant course for me with the help of which I will have ample of career opportunities. Later on my reach started to which country and College/University I should go for. I choose Australia as Australian degree is well recognized in Nepal and it is fast becoming a preferred destination in terms of education among Nepalese students. Australian Universities are of high standards and offers an educational experience that makes a real difference. Australian unique kind of education and a learning style encourages one to be innovative, creative and think independently. Degrees from Australia are very successful in finding jobs and hold prominent positions worldwide. Later on I choose to get enrolled in Central Queensland University for my international studies as I was impressed by overall feedback from present and pass-out students on the website and facebook official page of this university. I found that CQ University is ranked in the top two per cent of universities worldwide and awarded five-stars for full-time employment and starting salary. I was further pleased to know that recently two CQ University researchers have a prestigious grant worth over $1 million to access whether health service integration is the key to Indigenous children’s resilience and mental health.

Reason for choosing Australia over home country and other Global study destinations  

I searched for similar courses in my home country, USA, UK and Canada. On the completion of thorough research regarding available courses, course structure, syllabus, human and material resources including availability of trained and professional teachers and guides, fee structure, learning environment, I finally selected Central Queensland University, Australia for Master degree. Talking about the study options in my home country I came to know that Tribhuvan University, and Purbanchal University offer Master of Public Health courses which are usually of 1.5 years duration. Pokhara University offers Master of Public Health under two wings namely MPH in Health Promotion Education and MPH in Health Services Management, which are of 2 years duration. Master of Public Health is also offered by B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, which is of 2 years duration and quite renowned in comparison to other universities but still in terms of international standard it lacks in various aspects. Although the curriculums of all these universities include provisions for practical hours, fieldwork but the implementation of those practical hours are not satisfactorily conducted, and hence the degree is unable to produce highly skilled professionals required to address major health issues globally. Moreover, the international rankings of the university and lack of advanced educational technology in Nepal has compelled me to search for abroad study destinations and in course of this search Australia seemed to be the most promising destination for me. While I planned other foreign countries for my further study, my options were USA, UK, Canada and Australia. I was anticipated for such environment that would provide me world widely accepted theoretical and practical platform with proficiency of high degree research. Talking about neighboring country, several Indian universities offer the Master of Public Health (MPH) program which are Manipal University, University of Luckhnow, Jawaharlal Nehru University, KLE University, Amity University and so on. The education system in India are also theory based, even the practical field related to my subject is few and also lagging in different settings. There is limited availability in teaching and training courses in specialized areas of public health like health economics, healthcare financing, health systems, health policy, health informatics, advanced epidemiology, health social sciences, environmental health, mental health, public health nutrition, public health leadership and governance, entomology, and public health engineering. In addition, the master degree, gained from India would be just limited within Nepal and India. So, I want to acquire globally accepted degree.

Australia’s has considerably lower living expenses and tuition costs than in other countries like United States and United Kingdom, which are the other popular destinations for international students. Though USA is a popular destination, postgraduate courses are normally of 1-year duration depending on the study level. Master of Public Health available in USA have tuition fee ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 annually. There is three year course of Master of Public health in Monroe College in USA having tuition fee of US$ 37935. It requires additional foundation course prior to the main course. Also, Bastyr University is offering public health degree for US$ 21,193. In USA it is required to sit for additional admission test for master degree like Graduate Record examinations (GRE) or GMAT. One the reason for not choosing USA was long preparation time for GRE which consumes more time. Likewise, in United Kingdom, I searched many educational institutions cease in between study period and the students didn’t get refund of the money they invested for the study in the recent years. Similarly, the universities of UK have an average annual cost reach up to £30,000 annually, which is very expensive. The tuition fee of University of Liverpool has a total cost of £17,950 annually and of City, University of London has fee of £15,000 yearly. Likewise, I did not select Canada for my higher education because of the reason that the processing duration of Canada is longer and also Canadian stay is more concerned with adverse climate of cold temperature -3 degree to -19 degree. Moreover, The University of Alberta offer MPH that has total cost of $23890 per year and University of Toronto has an annual cost of Canadian Dollar$22,879.Most of these options were unsuitable for me considering their duration of the course, tuition fees, climatic adversity, and Visa-processing procedures. In comparison, I found Australia as the best choice for tuition fees, climatic adjustment along with reasonable costs. Also, the provision of getting an opportunity for Post Study Work Visa was one of the remarkable factors for me. Also availability of various specifications of study allows us to focus on public health issues or on particular international public health, including nutrition and tropical health. Moreover, the level of international support and peaceful and comfortable educational environment, which Australia offers, cannot be match by other countries.

Selection of the city; Sydney

Sydney is the biggest city in Australia with population of over5 million people. It is the state capital of New South Wales and situated in eastern coast of the country. Studying in Sydney opens new horizons for everyone who chooses it for location. It’s one of the cities where life is culturally rich and exciting. People from different cultures stay there through which I will get chance to learn their culture as well. It is clean, safe and friendly so that everyone feels welcome there. Studying there I can enjoy hot summers and gentle, mild winters, its temperate climate is favorable for all the people. That means I will get many opportunities to go out and explore the city. Sydney’s public transport system is the easiest and cheapest way to move around the city. Sydney offers a wide range of safe and central accommodation, an ideal environment for me to meet and make friends. Sydney has been listed in the top most livable cities in the world for many consecutive years, according to Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Everyone can have peace of mind when studying in such a city with high quality of life as Sydney. Studying abroad means developing global network. During my study period I can meet new people, to network and to develop connections with other future professionals in the field.

Reasons for Not Choosing Other Countries

My options for further study in abroad were Canada, USA, Norway and Australia. I researched all these countries specifically as I was searching for such educational degree which is accepted worldwide and also provide theoretical and practical education. Tuition fees and living cost of Canada and USA was relatively higher. Other factors that made me aware to apply for Canada was long time duration for processing as well as uncertainty of the visa. Likewise, United States has lack of security and also takes long time for providing Visa and is also very difficult to prepare. Though Norway gave the free tuition fee facilities the problem of language (Norwegian language) and one intake per year drove out my interest to apply in Norway. Looking all the disadvantages Australia overweight it by the advantages that it has low tuition fees, favorable climate, peaceful environment and the security.

Reasons for Not Choosing Nepal

It is true that I was seeking for master’s degree but it is also true that I was searching for an advanced and updated version of curriculum as well as techniques. This is still lacking in context of Nepal although it had developed its system comparing to the past. Nepal also lacks the research centers and have low rate of practical education after completion of the study. Due to this reason people do not get the job according to the capability and also had very low salary.

In Nepal, we have reputed universities like Tribhuwan University, Kathmandu University, Pokhara University and Purbanchal University which are popular in course content and running the MPH programme. But they selectively enroll students in very few numbers accounted to 5-10 students per year as per the requirement of the Universities which is very challenging and difficult to get the admission. Despites of competition there is also the roll of power and the fame due to the political instabilities which I definitely could not access. Similarly, Nepal has no quality education system and is exam-oriented mindset which is worthless in this competitive world of today’s generation. Before selecting Australia, I have researched for different countries but I found that Australia has an impressive number of study options for the students with more than 1100 institutions and 22000 courses to choose from; it becomes easy for an international student to choose their relevant field of study.

Why I choose Master of Public Health

Public health is a division of the health field that focuses on populations, and prevention and health promotion rather than individuals and treatment of medical conditions. Public health professionals work to prevent health conditions from occurring or re-occurring by implementing educational programs, creating policies, providing services, regulating health systems, and performing rigorous research. The main goal is to both prevent illness and disease and help individuals adopt healthy behaviors.

I’m interested in learning social perspective of public health skills, knowledge and practice and I want to pursue a career in public health. Masters of Public Health is an innovative course that will offers an array of career opportunities. Since the population is growing exponentially, a high demand is expected for public health professionals. Also, public health professionals make a difference in the community as a whole.

When I will complete my degree in Master of Public Health I will find myself a better skilled professional person. I will have different options after doing this course. They are as below:

•   Public health is a broad field, so the job opportunities are diverse and plentiful. Public health professionals work in many different areas, such as communicable diseases, biostatistics, epidemiology, health education, health policy and management, and environmental health. They also work in varied settings, like governmental organizations, community-based agencies, non-profit entities, schools, and medical facilities. Public health professionals come from an array of backgrounds and can specialize in many different fields. Examples of possible career titles include environmental health specialize, public health policy advisor, public health teacher, social worker, and biostatistician.
• Public health has a positive job outlook. Employment of public health professionals is expected to grow significantly due to the need to reduce healthcare costs and response to global issues, such as potential pandemics, bio-terrorism, and air and water pollution. Additionally, increased public awareness of public health and wellness has sparked corporate and government support for a variety of prevention and education efforts, like tobacco use, obesity, diabetes, diet, and workplace safety.
•   Opportunities in various other public health career fields are also expected to increase significantly in the next decade. As the costs of health care continue to increase significantly, many organizations are looking for ways to reduce expenditures, and public health efforts to provide education and resources are a favorable way to prevent illness and disease.
• Public health professionals are key individuals essential for improving the health of all members of local, national, and international communities. Public health is an ideal field for individuals wanting to make a difference in the community and strive to look at the big-picture to address current and emerging complex heath issues. These are few reasons which made me interested in pursuing my further studies in Master of Public Health.

 

During the MPH Program at CQ University

I need to complete 16 units, which includes 10 core units and a choice of electives or of undertaking the project stream. The core public health units are compulsory and include: Understanding Public Health, Systems Thinking in Public Health, Social Epidemiology, Public Health Action and Evaluation, Global Public Health, Participatory Health Research, Cultural Immersion and Lived Experience, and three cross-cultural communities units. I will have the opportunity to shape my degree to my own needs by either selecting from the list of electives or by undertaking the project stream.

 Reason to choose CQ University:

Moreover, I was impressed by Fees Structure offered by CQ University for MPH as the fees for 2yrs is AUD$ 57769.00 including Overseas Health Insurance cover. Whereas fees in University of Melbourne for same course and same years duration is AUD$ 86000.00, in La Trobe University is AUD$ 80000.00, in Monash University it is AUD$ 66000.00 and in Deakin University it is AUD$ 60000.00. In addition, CQ University has provided me 20% reduction on tuition charges at a minimum for the first year and potentially the duration of my studies. So, CQ University is affordable for me. Overall, CQU recognition, quality education, accessibility and affordability, graduate employability rate along with its student support services helped me choose the university. I’m confident that MPH from CQU will prepare me for a bright career ahead. I will feel proud to carry back home a reputed International Degree and to be alumni of CQ University.

 

Financial Arrangement

My parents including my in laws are investing for my study in Australia. They have been very supportive regarding my education and are very happy to invest in my pursuit of higher education in Australia. So, I am well prepared for my master’s degree in Australia. My mother Mrs.(Name) working as a teacher in (Company Name) and has an annual income of NPR 3,61,200 from salary. She also has an income of NPR 12,60,000 from house rent and land lease. My sister has a income of NPR 4,80,000 from salary per annum working as a Civil Engineer at ERMC Pvt. Ltd. Along with this my mother in law is a senior accountant (Company Name) with an annual income of NPR 4,20,000. Also my brother in law is an operations manager at Agni Hospitality Supplies Pvt. Ltd. with an annual income of NPR 7,20,000. This sums to total annual income of NPR 32,41,000 (AUD 41550). Additionally, we have taken educational loan of NPR 54,00,000 from Nepal SBI Bank, which will be used to support my initial year expenses of tuition fees, living cost and OHSC. Moreover we can use some plots of land if such circumstances arises. I ensure that financial status of my family is well and can afford my study cost along with the living expenses during my study period in Australia. As our family has invested heavily in the real estate business back here in Nepal, we had to sanction loan for my studies mortgaging the land we had invested in.

My Future Career Plan after completing my qualification from Australia

Immediately after I completed my MPH, I will apply for Post Study Work (PSW) visa which will help me to apply my theoretical knowledge into practice. Then, I will be returning back to my home country Nepal and look forward the opportunity to join health promotion jobs in various NGOs and INGOs aiming with different strategies and plans in Nepal. I will also try for the health service administration jobs in Nepal government to secure my career. Through proper interventions, planning and implementation of effective policies, my passion is to bring fruitful change to Nepalese health sector and promote people’s health. Master of Public Health from CQ University will help me to develop the knowledge and skills to address public health challenges and understanding of current global and environmental health issues, thus broadening my employment opportunities in various INGOs, NGOs, governmental and private hospitals, colleges and other research centers. Moreover, I can also work as a Lecturer or coordinator in one of the reputed organizations such as: Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital, Birat Health College, Nursing Campus, B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Sailaja Acharya Memorial Polytechnic, and Maharajgunj Teaching Campus among others. In long term, I dream to be an entrepreneur. I have a future plan to start my own development project and a health college to boost up my career graph.

Cost Benefit Analysis                                                                 

On the accomplishment of MPH degree from Australian University, I can get appointed in reputed organizations with starting monthly salary package of around NPR 60,000 to NPR 80,000 in my home country. As I work hard and gain experience in related field, I can raise my salary to more than NPR 1,00,000 per month. So with a time frame of 5 to 6 years, my job would help me to get the returns of my MPH degree cost. Further, I will have accumulated all the required experiences to hold the government job in the post of senior officer to secure my future.

Reason to come back home country

I will have ample of opportunities in Nepal after being MPH graduate and will feel contented. Besides my professional career plans in my motherland, I also have certain family ties and responsibilities. As me and my husband are the younger child of my parent and in-laws respectively, we have responsibilities to look after them and support them physically and emotionally in their old age. We strongly believe in living together sharing happiness and sorrows together. The total value of my family and in-law’s property is NPR 62,888,000/- and annual source of income is NPR 31.23 Lakhs. Patriotism is in my blood. I have realized that in this developing phase of my country, my contribution is important. With strong determinations, I will aid for uplifting Nepalese public health sector and promote people’s health. I have already seen my future career in my home country. I, therefore, want to assure that after completion of my study, I will return back to my home country Nepal to handle my personal as well as professional responsibilities.

Visa Condition

Being overseas student in Australia, there are certain rules and regulation that must be followed, else will be legally punished according to Australian Government. I am aware about the student visa conditions belonging to subclass 500. Some of the student visa conditions are listed below:

I am allowed to work only 40 hours per fortnight when my course is in session. During the recognized vacation offered by education provider, I can work more than 40 hours per fortnight. There must be adequate maintenance of satisfactory attendance in the course i.e. 80 % attendance should be maintained and course progress for each study period as required by the education provider. I must remain enrolled in a registered course. I cannot change University before 6 months, in dependent case-dependent cannot study for more than three months. I must maintain adequate arrangement for health insurance during my stay in Australia under policy of OSHC. I must inform my education provider about the address where I live in Australia within 7 days of arriving in Australia. If I change the living place, I must inform the education provider immediately. I must not be involved in activities that are disruptive to, or in violence threaten harm to, the Australian community or a group within the Australian community. Further, the subclass also includes that student should have maintained sufficient money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for the period of stay in Australia.

Declaration

I would like to assure you that I will be under the rules of visa subclass 500 and I will give my best effort in learning and developing knowledge and skills regarding my subject matter. I will finish my intended course in exact time with good grades and will return back to my home country for achieving my future goal. With full honesty and due respect, I have put forward my intensions & plans.
